George Bennett to lead LottoNL-Jumbo at Giro d'Italia

George Bennett is set to lead Dutch WorldTour team LottoNL-Jumbo at the Giro d'Italia in May.

Directeur Sportif Merijn Zeeman confirmed this to Wielerflits, adding that the team will also include Robert Gesink and Danny van Poppel.

Gesink has led the team in grand tours in the past but this will no longer be the case, Zeeman suspects. "I think his time as classification rider in grand tours is overr," he said. "This has to do with the evolution of cycling. Robert is a big guy. He is ten to fifteen kilos heavier than the Nairo Quintanas of this world, due to his height.

"Then you have to make a huge effort to be able to keep up with the best climbers day after day. In addition, he has a lot of passion for the way he can race now."

With Bennett aiming for the classification and Gesink set to compete for stage wins in the mountains, Van Poppel completes the leadership for flat stages. The former Team Sky rider will get two helpers, Zeeman confirmed.

Others mentioned in LottoNL-Jumbo's likely Giro selection are Jos van Emden and Koen Bouwman.

Steven Kruijswijk will skip the Giro this year, and instead focuses on the Tour de France along with Gesink and sprinter Dylan Groenewegen.
