MICHELE SCARPONI
TIRRENO-ADRIATICO

The route for the upcoming Tirreno-Adriatico will include a tribute to the late Michele Scarponi.

The event, also known as the 'Race between the Two Seas' will start at Lido di Camaiore at the Tirreno Sea on the 7th of March and will finish in San Benedetto del Tronto at the Adriatico on the 13th.

The race organised by RCS Sport / La Gazzetta Dello Sport will have an uphill finish on the 5th stage in the city of Filottrano, the city of Scarponi. The first stage will be a Team Time Trial followed by two days for sprinters, then two for puncheurs, a climbing final and an Individual Time Trial on the final day.

Scarponi, who was killed last April during a training ride, finished on the podium of Tirreno-Adriatico three times. First as a winner in 2009, in second position in 2010, and third in 2011, behind Cadel Evans and Robert Gesink.

If Peter Sagan (Bora-hasgrohe) starts in the race, he will have the chance to win his eighth stage and join a group formed by Alessandro Petacchi, Moreno Argentin and Guiseppe Saronni. Only Roger de Vlaeminck and Oscar Freire have won more stages in the Italian race, with 15 and 11 victories respectively.
