Peter Sagan started his season with a victory at the People's Choice Classic in Adelaide, Australia. The short criterium is the opener of the Tour Down Under.

The race was formed by 22 laps on a circuit that completed a total of 50.6 kilometres in and around Adelaide. The day started with a breakaway of five men, formed by Fumiyuki Beppu (Trek-Segafredo), Tom Bohli (BMC), Manuele Boaro (Bahrain-Merida), Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha-Alpecin) and Zakkari Dempster (UniSA Australia), which was caught with two laps to go.

During the last kilometres, Bora-hansgrohe took charge of the pace and organised itself in a way that left Sagan in a perfect position to fight at the final sprint, crossing the finish line ahead of Lotto Soudal's Andre Greipel and Mitchelton-Scott's Caleb Ewan.

"The People's Choice Classic was a fast race with a fast sprint finish," said the World Champion at the end of the day. "The team worked very well, following the plan the sports directors had set.

"When the final sprint started, I found myself a bit closed but I then took Greipel's wheel and managed to beat the others on the line. I'm very happy with this result for me and the team. Thanks to BORA-hansgrohe, Specialized and all the sponsors and partners of the team for their support."

Team Sky's Kristoffer Halvorsen suffered a crash against the barriers during the last meters and won't start in the Tour Down Under.
