Peter Sagan was satisfied with his third place in the opening stage of the Tour Down Under, having come close to victory but crossing the line behind Andre Greipel and Caleb Ewan.

The final of the first stage was a fight for sprinters, as was anticipated. Sagan, who had won the pre-race Criterium, was part of the battle in the last meters and finished on the last step of the day's podium.

"Although it wasn't as hot as last year, we raced in a very warm Australian summer day," said the World Champion at the end of the stage. "The race played out as expected with a big sprint finish and the team followed the plan the sports directors had set in the morning.

"I finished third in the sprint, probably not the result we would have liked, but still good for the start of the season. I feel in good form and I will give my best during the rest of the week."

Bora-hansgrohe is pleased with this result in the opening of the WorldTour season. "The first stage of the Tour Down Under was kept under control and in the end, Peter took third place in the bunch sprint," said Sports Director Steffen Radochla.

"It was another good result for the team. All riders are in good form and I feel positive about the rest of the week. We will talk with the guys on our strategies for the sprint and take it one day at a time."
