The Union Europeenne de Cyclisme (UEC) has announced that the distances of the European Championships will be shortened from 2019.

The governing body plans to make the road races for men of distances between 150 and 180 kilometres, while the women's will be from 100 to 120 kilometres. For the time trials, the course will be the same for all categories and will be between 20 and 30 kilometres.

"Shorter courses should make the races more attractive for the media and the public again," said the UEC from Valkenburg, the Netherlands, where the 2018 Cyclo-cross World Championships will take place over the weekend.

The UEC also welcomed the arrival of the video commissioner that will be tested in the three Grand Tours and other big races in 2018 and affirmed that a championship of electric bikes is in consideration. This championship would be called Formula E-Bike.
