Quick-Step Floors' Elia Viviani has taken the victory at the second stage of the Dubai Tour. After being the second in the first stage, the Italian was the fastest in the Wednesday's final sprint.

The route of the day was 190 kilometres long and took the riders from the Skydive Dubai to Rai Al Khaimah. The breakaway of the day was formed originally by six riders but was later on reduced to three: Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Charles Planet (Team Novo Nordisk) and Fu Wen Xue (Mitchelton-BikeExchange).

At 22 kilometres from the finish line and when the peloton was getting closer to the escapees, Elia Viviani suffered a puncture and was left behind. His teammates dropped from the main group to take the sprinter back to a good position ahead of the final kilometres.

The remainders of the escape group were caught just passing the 10-kilometre mark and the sprint trains continued leading the way to set a high pace for the final. It was a fast finish and Viviani wanted to celebrate his birthday with a victory, which he managed to do by crossing the line just ahead of the winner of the first stage, Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo).

Astana's Riccardo Minali was third, Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) fourth and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) finished in fifth place. Despite his second position at the stage, Groenewegen continues to lead the General Classification at the end of the day.
