Christophe Laporte of Cofidis has won the first regular stage of the Tour la Provence. Prologue winner Alexandre Geniez remains in the overall lead for another day.
The stage led the peloton from Aubagne to Istres with a total distance of 165.9 kilometers. A few breakaways were allowed during the stage, none of which were able to stay ahead of the pack until the end. The last attempt was neutralized at about nine kilometers from the end.
WB Aqua Protect Veranclassic rider Justin Jules appeared to be heading for victory but the Frenchman misjudged the final curve. This allowed Laporte to fly past his compatriots and take the win ahead of Romanian Eduard Michael Grosu (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Pierre Barbier (Roubaix Lille Metropole). Jules ended up in tenth position.
Little changed at the top of the overall standings. AG2R La Mondiale’s Geniez remains in first place with an advantage of two seconds over Sylvain Chavanel of Direct Energie.
