Nathan Haas beats Greg van Avermaet at 2nd stage of Tour of Oman

Katusha-Alpecin's Nathan Haas has taken the victory at the second stage of the Tour of Oman. The Australian beat Greg van Avermaet at the finish line.

The 167.5km stage took place between the Sultan Qaboos University and Al Bustan over a hilly course. The day started with the breakaway of Loic Chetout (Cofidis), Fabricio Ferrari (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Markel Irizar (Trek-Segafredo) and Danny Pate (Rally).

BMC controlled the pace of the peloton in the last kilometres to boost the chances of van Avermaet to take the stage victory and the leader's jersey. At eight kilometres to go, Irizar launched an attack from the front group but was soon caught by the peloton, which had already swallowed the remaining escapees.

Quick-Step Floors' Niki Terpstra tried his luck at four kilometres from the finish line and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) and van Avermaet led a group of around 10 riders to hunt him down. This group arrived to the final meters together and Haas proved to have the strongest legs in the reduced sprint.

Van Avermaet was second and Lutsenko third. The Australian of Katusha-Alpecin also took the leader's jersey.

Soren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb) was one of the favourites for the day but crashed close to the 10-kilometre mark and couldn't fight for the stage victory.
