Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) has won the first stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia/Ruta del Sol in a photo finish bunch sprint.

The day's breakaway was formed during the very first part of the 197.6-kilometre stage between Mijas and Granada. Silvan Dillier (AG2R La Mondiale), Luis Mas (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Romain Sicard (Direct Energie) took part in the escape group that took an advantage of five minutes over the peloton.

At around 50 kilometres to go Astana and Sky took control of the pace of the peloton and the gap was reduced fast, getting to 25 seconds with 20 kilometres to go. It was then that Dillier tried to continue on his own but a few kilometres later he was reeled back into the pack and the stage was sentenced to a bunch sprint.

It was a chaotic sprint in which Sacha Modolo (EF Education First-Drapac) seemed to have the advantage and as he raised his hands to celebrate, Boudat made the last move and crossed the finish line just ahead of the Italian. The American team even had time to tweet about Modolo's supposed win before the victory of the Frenchman was confirmed.

Clement Venturini (AG2R La Mondiale), Andrea Pasqualon (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Tosh Van Der Sande (Lotto Soudal) completed the top five of the day. With the day's victory, Boudat takes the lead in the General Classification.
