Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) has won the third stage of the Tour of Oman. The Olympic champion got the victory he was looking for after finishing second in the previous stage.

The stage took place between the German University of Technology and Wadi Dayqah Dam over 179.5 kilometres. The breakaway of the day was formed by Loic Chetout (Cofidis), Wouter Wippert (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Xandro Meurisse (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Nick Schultz (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and got an advantage of more than five minutes over the bunch.

It was a rolling stage and Wippert was the first of the escapees to be left behind on one of the ascents. The next victim was Chetout and the remaining two got caught at 20 kilometres from the finish line by a peloton led by Katusha-Alpecin, which was trying to defend the leader's jersey of Nathan Haas.

The last ascent of the day was led by Astana and the peloton was reduced to a group of around 50 men, which fought in the final sprint. Van Avermaet calculated the best moment to attack and crossed the finish line ahead of Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana).

The Belgian also climbs to the top of the General Classification.
