Tim Wellens conquers the cobbles and leads GC in Andalucia

Tim Wellens has won the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia/Ruta del Sol. The rider of Lotto Soudal was the fastest at the final cobbled climb.

The stage was 194.7 kilometres long between Sevilla and Alcala de los Gazules, with a route that included one second-category climb and one of the third category. The last big escape of the day had Andrey Amador (Movistar) and Sep Vanmarcke (EF Education First-Drapac) as stars, but they were caught on the last climb at more than one kilometre from the finish line.

Wellens felt at home on the cobbled street leading to the finish line and crossed the finish line with a five-second advantage over Mikel Landa (Movistar) and a 12 second lead on Astana's Jakob Fuglsang. Wout Poels (Sky), who was the leader at the start of the day, arrived in fourth position and went down to the third position of the General Classification behind Wellens and Landa.

The Lotto-Soudal rider will have to defend his jersey in the last stage, an Individual Time Trial of 14.2 kilometres in Barbate.
