Alexander Kristoff has won the first stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour. The rider was the fastest in a very active final bunch sprint.

The first stage in Abu Dhabi was 189 kilometres long between Madinat Zayed Edu Complex and ADNOC School in Al Fahim. The day started with the news of a fall of Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) that affected the same shoulder he broke during the 2017 Tour de France and forced him out of the race.

The escape group of the day had five riders that included Damiano Caruso (BMC) Toms Skujins (Trek Segafredo) and Charles Planet (Novo Nordisk), who were also the last ones to be caught at almost 10 kilometres from the line.

Teams like LottoNL-Jumbo and Quick-Step Floors set the pace of the peloton in the last kilometres with the hopes of positioning their men for the finish. The bunch sprint was chaotic and Alexander Kristoff could manoeuvre successfully to take the victory of the stage.

The European champion crossed the finish line ahead of Andrea Guardini (Bardiani CSF) and Mitchelton-Scott's Caleb Ewan. Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) and Daniel Mclay (EF Education Firs-Drapac) completed the top five of the day.
