Belgian former cyclist Tom Boonen has signed for Lotto Soudal as an advisor, but he will not play a role in races.

After an entire cycling career at Quick-Step, the Belgian former star has decided to take a role at the other team of his country at the WorldTour level. There, Boonen will be an ambassador for the project called "Captains of Cycling" which main objective is to get investors for the team.

But his arrival at Lotto-Soudal doesn't happen out of the blue. Paul De Geyter, the General Manager of the Team, was also the manager of the rider for years and his father works for Ridley, which provides the bicycles for Lotto-Soudal. "My career also started with Marc Sergeant 20 years ago, he planted the idea in my mind that I could become a professional rider. He was my first serious team leader," Boonen said to Belgian broadcaster Sporza.

Boonen also says that he takes this role as a way of helping Belgian cycling. "The idea is to convert Lotto Soudal into a global player. I have asked myself what I considered more of a challenge: to start at Quick-Step, which is already at the top level, or helping Lotto make the connection with the world teams," he commented. "I think I can do something better for Belgian cycling here than at Quick-Step."

Even though Boonen is not expected to be in the team cars close to the riders, he has said that the riders can come to him every time they want to ask for help to improve in the sport.
