Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has won the Queen stage of the 2018 Abu Dhabi Tour and took the overall victory of the race.

After taking victories at the Challenge Mallorca and the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, the Spaniard keeps showing that he is in great shape after recovering from the horror crash at the 2017 Tour de France.

The last stage in Abu Dhabi was ridden over a route of 199 kilometres between Al Ain and the climb of Jebel Hafeet that proved to be very difficult for the riders because of extreme weather conditions that mixed heat, rain and winds. The escape of the day was formed by nine riders, including Lotto Soudal's Andre Greipel and was caught just before the start of the last climb by a peloton headed by Astana.

The climb managed to break the pack and at six kilometres from the finish line, Valverde led an attack that was followed by Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors), Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) and Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe). At the last kilometre, only the Spaniard and Lopez remained of this front group and Valverde had the strength to launch a last moment attack, leaving the Colombian in second position.

Alaphilippe crossed the finish line third, Majka fourth and Kelderman fifth. With the victory, Valverde also topped the General Classification and was accompanied on the podium by Kelderman and Lopez, who were second and third respectively.
