Sonny Colbrelli and Vincenzo Nibali will share the captaincy of Bahrain-Merida at Strade Bianche.

The Italian duo will together face the punchy hills, the gravel roads and the bad weather that will be part of this edition of the race. "I’m debuting in Italy after a weekend in Belgium that gave me some good results," said Colbrelli.

"With the Strade Bianche, I have a good feeling also because it reminds me a little of the Northern Classics. The tactic is simple: stay close to the big favourites and play my chances in the final going up to Siena."

For Nibali, this will be his first European race in 2018. "I start my racing season in Europe in Siena," he commented. "After the Tour of Oman, I trained at home going often uphill and I think I’m ready for the dirt roads. It’s a race that I’ve always liked and I just hope to be less unlucky than last year when I fell and after I had a flat tire."

Another Italian will be the third man supporting the two captains. "Our leaders will be Sonny and Vincenzo with Giovanni Visconti in the third punch role," explained sports director Alberto Volpi.

"The 63 km gravel roads will be very selective as usual, but also the weather conditions will be decisive. In case of cold and bad weather, in fact, the race will be exhausting and the strongest and most resistant riders will emerge."

Bahrain-Merida's line-up for Strade Bianche (3rd of March):

Grega Bole

Matej Mohoric
