Bronchitis forces John Degenkolb out of Paris-Nice

John Degenkolb has withdrawn from Paris-Nice after finishing the fifth stage. Trek-Segafredo announced that the rider is suffering from bronchitis.

"You know, I really don't like to abandon a race," said the cyclist at the end of the day. "It's not my style, it's not who I am. To be honest, it was a very difficult decision, but with my big goals coming up, I cannot take health risks now.

"I hope to recover as quickly as possible. So, no worries, I will be able to "chase aces" in the upcoming Monuments."

The Team's doctor has explained that the bad weather conditions and the difficulty of the stages to come would make it difficult for Degenkolb to recover if he would continue in the race. "John cannot lose any time in his recovery process since the Classics are just around the corner," he commented.

The team comments that it is unlikely that the calendar of the rider will suffer any changes.
