LottoNL-Jumbo's Primoz Roglic has taken the victory in the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Slovenian attacked in the uphill last kilometre and crossed the finish line on his own.

An escape group was created very early in the 239-kilometre long stage between Follonica and Trevi. A group of five that included Dennis Van Winden (Israel Cycling Academy), Nicola Biagioni (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Jacopo Mosca (Wilier Selle Italia), got an advantage of more than eight minutes over the peloton.

With eleven kilometres to go, the front group and other chasers were caught by a reduced group of around 40 riders. In the last kilometre, LottoNL-Jumbo's Primoz Roglic rode away from the pack and took an advantage that was enough for him to cross the finish line on his own becoming the first Slovenian to win in the Italian race.

Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates and Strade Bianche winner Tiesj Benoot were second and third on the stage.

BMC's Patrick Bevin, who was the GC leader after the second stage, suffered a crash and couldn't defend his jersey. Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) leads the overall standings after the third stage.

Another crash worth noting is the one of Simon Geschke (Sunweb), who had to be taken away by ambulance.
