Quick-Step Floors' Alvaro Hodeg has won the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya. A solid work of the Belgian team allowed the Colombian to cross the finish line in first place.

The shortest stage of the Spanish race was 152 kilometres long and had both start and finish in Calella. The escape of the day was formed by Andrey Grivko (Astana), Daniel Turek (Israel Cycling Academy), Antonio Molina (Caja Rural), Tom Bohli (BMC) and Jesus Ezquerra (Burgos).

Some kilometres later, Markel Irizar (Trek-Segafredo) joined the five escapees and the group got an advantage of more than three minutes on the peloton. With 20 kilometres to go, Grivko was caught by the peloton and a few kilometres later all the attempts of the escapees to stay in front failed and the pack reeled them back in.

At the ascent of the Collsacreu, Wilmar Paredes (Manzana Postobon) attacked and got a small difference with the peloton, but on the descent he was caught by the rest.

The last kilometre had several changes of rhythm that caused some breaks in the pack and an disorganised finish. Quick-Step Floors' work paid off and Hodeg crossed the finish line first, taking his second win with the Belgian team.

The young Colombian was faster than Sam Bennett and Jay McCarthy (Bora-hansgrohe) and also takes the lead in the General Classification of the race.
