Thomas De Gendt wins in Campodron and takes GC lead of Volta a Catalunya

Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) has taken the victory at the third stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The rider was part of the escape of the day and managed to stay ahead until the last moment.

The third stage of the Spanish race was 153 kilometres long after it was shortened due to risks of avalanches because of the heavy snowfall of the last days. Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Lluis Mas (Caja Rural) and Clement Chevrier (AG2R La Mondiale) escaped early on the day and were later joined by Mikel Bizkarra (Euskadi) and Pablo Torres (Burgos BH).

The five men created a gap of almost three minutes with the peloton. With 40 kilometres to go, only Mas, De Gendt and Bizkarra survived in the original escape group and some kilometres later, the Belgian attacked and went solo.

Behind him, Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) attacked from the pack and was followed by Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Mathias Frank (AG2R La Mondiale). This group got an advantage of almost a minute over the rest but Martin soon couldn't keep up with the pace and was captured by the peloton.

In the last kilometre, Quintana attacked but the rest of the chasers could keep with his rhythm. Meanwhile, De Gendt crossed the finish line solo and also took the lead in the General Classification.

The last meters were chaotic with a crash that affected riders like Alex Howes (EF Education First-Drapac), Adam Yates (Mitchelton Scott) and Daniel Navarro (Cofidis), while the chasers were caught by the peloton just before crossing the finish line.
