Jan Bakelants returns to competition five months after dramatic Il Lombardia crash

More than five months after the heavy crash he suffered at the 2017 Il Lombardia, Jan Bakelants (AG2R La Mondiale) will return to competition at the Classic Loire Atlantique.

The Belgian was given the green light to return to the road on March 22nd and will take part in the French race on March 24th.

Bakelants fell over a guardrail during a descent in Il Lombardia and suffered several fractures of the vertebrae and the ribs that required surgery and further therapy. "His perseverance in rehabilitating himself in order to resume his full level of activity has allowed Jan to regain a good physical condition, and the specialists who have examined him have agreed that he is fit to resume competition," said the medical director of the team Eric Bouvat.

"The short-term goal will be for him to progress to the point where he can recover 100% of his physical potential."
