Jarlinson Pantano has won the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya. The rider of Trek-Segafredo was one of the survivors of the escape of the day and raised his arms at the end of the longest stage of the race.
The 212.9-kilometre stage was the longest of the Spanish race and had an escape group of eight riders from the beginning. Cyclists like Danilo Wyss (BMC), Jarlinson Pantano (Trek-Segafredo), Laengen (UAE Team Emirates), Maxim Monfort (Lotto Soudal) and Jetse Bol (Manzana Postobon), got an advantage of more than four minutes on the peloton.
With more than 60 kilometres to go, Laengen, Monfort and Pantano attacked during a climb and left the others behind. As the kilometres passed, the pace got too difficult for the Lotto Soudal rider to keep up with, leaving his companions alone in the lead.
The duo survived until the end and Pantano showed to have the better legs in the final meters, taking the victory of the stage. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) managed to keep the lead of the General Classification.
