Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) has claimed the victory at the fourth stage of the Tour of the Alps. The Spaniard attacked in the last kilometres and crossed the finish line in Austria on his own.

The fourth day of racing featured a stage of 134.3 kilometres long between Chiusa and Lienz with a route that included two climbs of the second category. The breakaway of the day was formed in the first thirty kilometres and included riders like Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy), David de la Cruz (Sky) and Davide Villella (Astana).

The front group managed to create a gap of more than four minutes with the peloton and grew smaller with the climbs until they were all caught in the last descent due to the attacks in the reduced peloton. Riders like Chris Froome (Sky) and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) tried to escape in the descent but were eventually caught by the others.

In the last kilometres, Astana's Luis Leon Sanchez attacked and got a considerable gap with the favourites group, managing to cross the line by himself. Behind him, LottoNL-Jumbo's George Bennett and Koen Bouwman were second and third, respectively.

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) retains the leader's jersey with one day to go in the race.
