Mark Padun (Bahrain-Merida) has won the last stage of the 2018 Tour of the Alps. The rider took the victory thanks to a last kilometre attack while Thibaut Pinot won overall classification.

The last stage of the Alpine race was 162.2 kilometres long, featuring part of the circuit that will be used in the 2018 World Championships. The escape group of the day was formed in the first 30 kilometres and included riders like Manuel Senni (Bardiani-CSF), Francesco Gavazzi (Androni-Sidermec), Guy Niv (Israel Cycling Academy) and Francois Bidard (AG2R La Mondiale).

This group created a gap of more than eight minutes with the peloton but lost members in the multiple ascents of the Olympia Climb. At 30 kilometres to go, David de la Cruz (Sky) attacked and some kilometres later joined the front group.

With 20 kilometres remaining, the remainder of the breakaway was reeled back in by the reduced pack and moments later Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez launched a new attack and went on by himself. Behind him, the favourites rode together for a while but with 16 kilometres to go, Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida) attacked and only race leader Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) stayed at his wheel.

The duo caught Lopez, while behind riders like Chris Froome (Sky), George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) worked hard to close the gap. With six kilometres to go, the chasers caught the escapees and two kilometres later Mark Padun (Bahrain-Merida) attacked and took a considerable lead over the rest of the group.

The Ukranian crossed the finish line by himself, Bennett was second and Astana's Jan Hirt was third.

Pinot arrived with the group, which was enough for him to keep the lead in the General Classification of the race. The final podium was completed by Pozzovivo and Lopez.
