Rubén Plaza has won the third and final stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon. The 38-year old Spaniard managed to take the overall victory as well.

Plaza, riding for Israel Cycling Academy, was the only survivor from the breakaway and managed to maintain a gap back to the peloton, taking home his first win since the 2015 Vuelta a España.

The stage of the day was 174,8 km long and took the peloton over four categorised climbs. Shortly after the start in Segovia a breakaway of five riders formed. Lluis Más (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Nikolay Mihaylov (Delko Marseille Provence KTM), Robin Carpenter (Rally Cycling), Txomin Juaristi (Fundacion Euskadi) and Plaza earned an advantage of three minutes.

Plaza then left his breakaway companions on the Alto de Aguilones, defending a gap of 1.15 to the former breakaway and 3.15 to the peloton, with over 40 km still to go. The Spaniard did not slow down, he even expanded his lead to 3.40 shortly. Then he slowly started losing terrain to the peloton, but at the line in Avila he still had a 46 second advantage.

As he was only 19 seconds behind race leader Carlos Barbero (Movistar) at the start of the stage, he took the GC win as well. Barbero finished third on today’s stage, after Eduard Prades (Euskadi – Murias), but still ended up as runner up overall. Prades completed the overall podium.

The Vuelta a Castilla y Leon has been very successful for Israel Cycling Academy, after Mihkel Raïm won yesterday’s stage. The Israeli team showed that they are ready to take on the Giro, that starts in their home country. Carlos Barbero also enjoyed a successful weekend, with a stage win on Friday.
