The Dutch Team LottoNL-Jumbo is the first team that released its selection for the Giro d’Italia. New-Zealander George Bennett headlines the squad, as he aims at a good GC result in May.

He will be supported in the mountainous stages by Robert Gesink, Koen Bouwman, Bert-Jan Lindeman and Enrico Battaglin. Jos van Emden will be brought to Israel, where the Giro starts this year, to go for a second consecutive stage win. The winner of last year’s final time trial finds a prologue that should suit him. Danny van Poppel will be the Dutch team’s man to watch in the sprints, bringing his lead-out man Gijs van Hoecke.

In previous years the Dutch squad has been led by Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk. His goal this year is a good result at the Tour de France, after a disappointing Giro last year in which he did not finish. This gives Bennett the chance to go for a good result himself. The winner of last year’s Tour of California takes a squad with him that "should be able to play a role at every terrain," according to the team.

Bennett is one of the outsiders for the podium, after his win in the Tour of California last year. His good results in the early season, despite undergoing surgery to rid him of a rare side stitches in the winter, are proof of this.

The complete LottoNL-Jumbo line-up for the 2018 Giro d’Italia (May 4-27):

Enrico Battaglin (IT)
George Bennett (NZ)
Koen Bouwman (NL)
Robert Gesink (NL)
Bert-Jan Lindeman (NL)
Jos van Emden (NL)
