Tom Dumoulin finished 15th in the latest edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 1.24 back on winner Bob Jungels. The Sunweb rider told Dutch news outlet NOS that he lacked the real acceleration to follow the key attacks in the final, but added that he "felt better than last year here".

Even though results and feelings do not often match, this time Dumoulin’s statement seems to be true. Last year he finished 22nd, just fourteen seconds behind Alejandro Valverde. However, last year the race didn’t open up so early and there was a much larger group fighting for the win. The fact that Dumouling was still in the group heading to the final climb to Ans, despite having just come back from altitude training, shows that he is getting ready to defend his title at the Giro.

The preparations for the Giro have been very unlucky for the Dutchman so far. He suffered mechanicals at crucial moments during the Abu Dhabi Tour, while he crashed out of the Tirreno-Adriatico. Now Dumoulin will recover from Sunday’s race, and prepare himself for the opening time trial of the 2018 Giro d’Italia. A 9,7 km course awaits the peloton on May 4th in Jerusalem, giving the Sunweb rider an excellent chance at the first maglia rosa, provided he beats the specialists including Rohan Dennis and Jos van Emden.

The last time the Giro started with a time trial was during the Grande Partenza in Apeldoorn, 2016. The winner back then: Tom Dumoulin.
