Michael Matthews (Sunweb) was the fastest at the prologue of the Tour de Romandie. The rider completed the course in 5 minutes and 33 seconds.

The prologue of the Swiss race was a four-kilometre long individual time trial in Fribourg. One of the first riders to get into the leader's hot seat was Simon Spilak (Katusha-Alpecin) who was victorious in the race in 2010 and finished the circuit in five minutes and 54 seconds.

Minutes later, BMC Racing Team's Tom Bohli set the best time at five minutes and 34 seconds with some of the favourites still to go. Riders like Rohan Dennis (BMC) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal) couldn't top the time of the Swiss.

Team Sunweb's Michael Matthews delivered a strong performance and finished the route in five minutes and 33 seconds, moving Bohli to the second position by one second. One of the day's favourites Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) was third in the prologue.

"I had a rocky start to the season and things were difficult with my broken shoulder but I finally feel like things are on the up again," said the Australian. "I didn't know how well I would feel after the weekend but I gave my best and I'm really pleased that I could finish it off with the win.

"It was a beautiful course and I had a lot of fun out there today; I really enjoy TT's, especially ones like these where I can use my power. Tonight we'll just enjoy this win and tomorrow we'll focus on what we're going to do next."
