French WorldTour team AG2R has revealed its selection for the Giro d’Italia 2018. Alexandre Geniez travels to Italy as leader of the eight-men roster.
"He will try to ride for a good result in the GC, but he will also try to win a stage," says sports director Vincent Lavenu. Next to Geniez, special roles are there for sprinter and former cyclocross French Champion Clément Venturini and home rider Matteo Montaguti. The team is completed by François Bidard, Mikaël Chérel, Nico Denz, Hubert Dupont and Quentin Jaurégui.
30-year old Geniez aims at a stage win and another top-10 in the Giro, after a 9th place in 2015. Despite two DNF’s in the last two years, a promising run at the Tour of the Alps shows that he is getting closer to his best form that already earned him three victories in the early season. Geniez won the Grand Prix La Marseillaise in January, and took the prologue and the GC in the Tour Cycliste International La Provence. He wasn’t close to winning after this, but he showed he can still climb with the best in the Tour of the Alps.
Venturini will ride his first Grand Tour in his young road career. He is still looking for his first win of the season but has sprinted to a string of short results in the first few months for his new team, having moved up to the WorldTour from Cofidis in the winter. Together with experienced Italian Matteo Montaguti he will aim at stage wins.
