Former runner-up in the Giro d’Italia Johan Esteban Chaves will lead Mitchelton Scott in the Italian Grand Tour this year. He will share the leadership with Simon Yates, last year’s winner of the white jersey in the Tour de France. The roster of the Australian team is completely selected to support these two GC riders.

The talented youngsters will be supported by a strong team that includes Jack Haig, Roman Kreuziger and Mikel Nieve as men for the mountains. Sam Bewley, Chris Juul-Jensen and good old Svein Tuft have to provide support on the flat stages.

Kreuziger has just finished a successful Ardennes campaign, with a second place in the Amstel Gold Race, a fourth place in the Fleche Wallone and an eighth place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. If he can takes this form to the Giro he will be of much support for the Colombian and British leaders. Tuft will ride his seventh and last Giro, being in his final year as a pro. The Canadian is not 100 percent sure that this will be his last year, but he wants to start spending more time with his family, he told CyclingNews on Wednesday.

For Johan Esteban Chaves it is a return to the for him successful Italian soil. He almost won the Giro in 2016, losing the maglia rosa to Vincenzo Nibali on the penultimate day. Last year he went for a GC in the Tour and in the Vuelta, but he did not make the top-10 in either of the two Grand Tours. Simon Yates is making his Giro debut. His brother Adam finished 9th last year.

Complete roster of Mitchelton-Scott for the Giro d'Italia (4th to 27th of May):

Sam Bewley (AUS)
Johan Esteban Chaves (COL)
Jack Haig (AUS)
Christopher Juul-Jensen (DEN)
Roman Kreuziger (CZE)
Mikel Nieve (SPA)
Svein Tuft (CAN)
Simon Yates (GBR)
