Lotto-Soudal's Thomas De Gendt has taken a solo victory at the second stage of the Tour de Romandie. The Belgian was part of the escape group and remained as lone survivor until the end of the stage.

The second stage of the Swiss race was 173.9 kilometres long between Delemont and Yverdon-Les-Bains. The racing day started with the escape of five men that included Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Victor Campenaerts, Andrey Grivko (Astana), Nate Brown (BMC) and Matteo Fabbro (Katusha-Alpecin).

The escapees created a gap of more than seven minutes with the pack and as the kilometres passed their number decreased because of exhaustion or mechanical problems. With less than 30 kilometres to go, only Brown and De Gendt remained but the ascent of the Cuarny proved to be too much for the rider of EF Education and left the Belgian riding on his own.

De Gendt crossed the finish line on his own and Sonny Colbrelli and Samuel Dumoulin were second and third, at more than two seconds from the victor of the stage. Brown still had a chance to take the overall lead but was caught by the pack at about one kilometer from the line.

LottoNL-Jumbo's Primoz Roglic kept the lead in the General Classification as he arrived with the peloton.
