Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R La Mondiale) finished in the third position of the second stage at the Tour de Romandie. The rider fought against Sonny Colbrelli in the sprint for the second position of the day.

The stage, won by Lotto-Soudal's Thomas De Gendt, had a strong escape group and a peloton that was unable to catch the men in front. "The day was very hard and tense with a lot of side wind," Dumoulin commented. "We were involved and active throughout the stage, and we stayed together as a team. I came out of the Tro Bro Leon a little disappointed, and I wanted to get a good result in Romandie, which will be one of the only UCI WorldTour events that I will race this season.

"I had not planned to compete in the sprint, but second place was at stake. And even having suffered all day long, might as well try till the end."

Two minutes after the arrival of De Gendt, the pack prepared to launch a sprint for the second position. "With 500 meters, I was not badly placed, and then Pierre Latour just went crazy in the lead out," the rider explained. "In a sprint like this, I could not have managed on my own. I'm happy to show that I still have good legs... at my age. The whole team is in good shape.

"After today, Pierre is still in the top 10, Mathias Frank is certainly in the game, and there are some good opportunities for us in the general classification. And then for me, there is still a card to play on Sunday in Geneva."
