Italian prodigy Letizia Paternoster of Astana has won the 2018 Festival Elsy Jacobs after beating her rivals in the closing sprint of the last stage.

The second of two regular stages was also the longest at 111.1 kilometers, with both start and finish in the town of Garnich.

Cervelo's Ashleigh Moolman Pasio had big plans for the day, trailing race leader Christine Majerus (Boels-Dolmans) by just 12 seconds. The South African attacked and was followed by the race leader, as well as Alexis Ryan (Canyon-SRAM), Eugenia Bujak (BTC City) and Sabrina Stultiens (WaowDeals).

The group was reeled back in at 21 kilometers from the finish but Moolman Pasio immediately gave it another try and quickly created a gap with her chasers.

The Cervelo rider was again caught however and several other attacks followed, but all were neutralized by Majerus who was desperately trying to hold on to her yellow jersey.

The efforts clearly left Majerus exhausted and the Luxembourger could not compete for the top spots in the final, slightly uphill sprint. Instead it was Paternoster to take the victory, with which the Italian also jumped from sixth to first position in the overall standings.

The 18-year-old began the stage at nine seconds from Majerus, but her ten bonus seconds were enough for her to beat the title defender by one second.
