Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) has won the time trial of the first stage at the 2018 Giro d'Italia. The rider took the lead of the race by completing the circuit two seconds faster than Rohan Dennis, who had the best time for most of the day.

The first stage of the Italian grand tour was 9.7 kilometres long and featured a rolling course. News started even before the race started officially started with crashes during the recon of riders like Chris Froome (Sky), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Kanstantsin Siutsou (Bahrain-Merida), who was forced to withdraw with a broken vertebra (Read more: Kanstantsin Siutsou out of Giro d'Italia after time trial recon crash.)

One of the big favourites of the day and a strong candidate to take the Pink Jersey on the first day was Rohan Dennis. He didn't disappoint and set an early best time by stopping the clock at 12 minutes and 4 seconds.

Of the GC candidates, the first one to show a good performance was Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) who completed the course 31 seconds slower than Dennis. Soon after, it was Simon Yates' turn to cross the finish line and he did so at 18 seconds from the Australian TT champion.

Moments later, Bahrain-Merida's Domenico Pozzovivo stopped the clock at 12 minutes and 29 seconds, a solid start to his GC aspirations. European TT champion Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Soudal) completed the route with the same time as Dennis but a difference of 4/100th of a second kept the rider of BMC on the leader's hot seat.

The other GC rider for Mitchelton-Scott, Esteban Chaves, completed the circuit 44 second slower than the provisional leader. One of the most talked riders of the race, Chris Froome (Sky) finished at 35 seconds from Dennis.

Last year's champion Tom Dumoulin started the race on the right foot and finished the stage two seconds faster than the rider of BMC, taking the Pink Jersey on the first stage of the first grand tour of the year.
