Rohan Dennis is the new leader of the Giro d'Italia, adding his name to a select group of riders that have worn the leader's jerseys at all three grand tours.

The Australian took three bonification seconds at the intermediate sprint after perfect preparing work by his BMC teammates, and as such moved into first place with an advantage of one second on Tom Dumoulin.

In doing so, Dennis became only the 23rd rider ever to wear the leader's jerseys in all three grand tours.

"I made it with teamwork," Dennis said shortly after the stage. "Yesterday there was obviously teamwork behind the scenes in my individual time trial, but today the team rode for me for the last 30 kilometers into that intermediate sprint. Even before they made sure that (Victor) Campenaerts didn't get up the road and they delivered me perfectly for that sprint and then it was just making sure that I didn't lose any time or end up in splits in the final. Massive teamwork."

Dennis beat top sprinter Elia Viviani of Quick-Step at the intermediate sprint, but this doesn't mean that the Australian now considers himself the better sprinter.

"Viviani, to be honest, he sprinted but he didn't go full. It was good to see him get the stage win after, not really gifting it to me but he was kind, let's be honest," he concluded.
