Max Walscheid (Sunweb) has taken the victory at the final sprint of the third stage at the Tour de Yorkshire. The German was just faster than race leader Magnus Cort Nielsen.

The third stage of the British race was 181 kilometres long between Richmond and Scarborough. The day started with an escape group of five that included riders like Mathias Le Turnier (Cofidis) and Peter Williams (ONE Pro Cycling).

Behind them, the speed of the front part of the peloton made the bunch split in two. The front part increased the pace to catch the escapees, which it eventually did at 35 kilometres to go.

Soon there was another attempt of an escape that included riders like Brent Bookwalter (BCM) and Leonardo Basso (Sky). Some kilometres later, the peloton got together again to face the last kilometres. With a bit more than one kilometre to go, Chavanel (Direct Energie) launched an attack and created a gap with the pack.

But his strength was not enough and he was caught in the last meters, after which the final sprint took place. Sunweb's Max Walscheid took the victory with a very small margin on Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana), who managed to keep his leader's jersey. Jon Aberasturi (Euskadi Murias) took the third place of the day.
