Groupama-FDJ's Marc Sarreau has won the opening stage of the 2018 edition of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque / Grand Prix des Hauts de France.

Unsprisingly, the race started in the town of Dunkerque. Although the name indicates that the race should consist of four days, this was actually the first of six days of action as the last edition that did consists of four days took place in the 1960's.

The riders got under way with a 185.7km stage with finish in La Bassee. A breakaway with Jeremy Lecroq, Romain Combaud and Pierre Idjouadiene rode ahead of the pack until they were eventually caught at about 12 kilometers from the finish.

It was Sarreau to raise his arms at the end of the final sprint, ahead of Vital Concept's Bryan Coquard and AG2R La Mondiale's Rudy Barbier.

Nacer Bouhanni, one of the top names in the peloton for this race, had to settle for a disappointing ninth place.
