Annemiek van Vleuten of Mitchelton-Scott expects a heavy road race at the World Championships in Innsbruck later this year.

The Dutch rider has spent the last few days in Austria to explore the courses for both the road race and the time trial.

"During the road race we will face an eight-kilometer climb three times," she wrote on her blog Annemiekvanvleuten.nl. "The men will do this seven times, followed by a very steep climb. Unfortunately we're not doing that one, but with three of these climbs in a course of 155 kilometers it will definitely be a special and heavy World Championship.

Van Vleuten gave special attention to the course of the time trial, where she will defend the title she won in Bergen last year. "There are just as many altitude meters as last year," she said. "The difference is that it's more up and down and there isn't a really difficult climb like last year.

"It's a nice route though. You can't really find your rhythm at any moment and that's a good thing for me. It just keeps going up and down. On two occasions you really go up and there are some curves as well. I like the route!"

The 2018 UCI Road World Championships will take place from the 22nd to the 30th of September.
