Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) has won the 11th stage of the Giro d'Italia. The rider took his second victory at this edition of the race after a late attack.

The 11th stage was 156 kilometres long and the route featured some walls and unpaved roads that were certain to make it a difficult ride for the cyclists. The breakaway of the day was formed by Astana's Luis Leon Sanchez, BMC's Alessandro De Marchi and Androni Giocattoli's Fausto Masnada.

With 4.7 kilometres to go, the breakaway was reeled back in and immediately Zdenek Stybar (Quick-Step Floors) and Tim Wellens (Lotto-FixAll) attacked on a cobbled climb. Behind them, Sky's Sergio Henao and Davide Villella (Astana) suffered crashes while Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) seemed to struggle with the climb.

Wellens went on his own on the next climb but was soon caught by the favourites' group just as Simon Yates attacked. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) and Domenico Pozzovivo followed him while other riders like Chris Froome (Sky) and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) were left behind.

Yates took the stage victory and Dumoulin was second, limiting the damage to two seconds. Davide Formolo (Bora-hansgrohe), Alexandre Geniez (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Pozzovivo completed the top five of the day.
