After a few difficult days in the Giro d'Italia, Elia Viviani returned to winning ways in a convincing fashion at the 13th stage of the grand tour.

The Quick-Step rider easily defeated his rivals to take his third win in this Giro, and extend his lead in the points classification.

"It is amazing," he said shortly after an emotional stage win celebration. "After a few difficult days this is what I need and what the team needs because they worked hard today and they deserve it."

The Italian was seen struggling in the 12th stage as he had difficulties connecting with the peloton after being dropped.

"Yesterday we were all worried, because it was a bad day," he explained. The last two or three days were really bad but we were determined to keep this jersey until Rome and we want to win after a beautiful start. But like I said before, the sportive life is never easy. You win, you lose. You have a good moment, you have a bad moment. You live a dream, your dream ends, and then you have to start a new dream.

"Now it's one week to go. We have this jersey. I don't know what the gap is now but the important thing is that we are winning again. That's really important for me."
