Rohan Dennis of BMC Racing Team won the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia in a convincing manner, beating some of the world's top time trialists on the Italian roads.

The Australian pushed Tony Martin off the hot-seat by beating the German's top time by 14 seconds, and saw riders like Chris Froome and world champion Tom Dumoulin lose time in all of the three sectors.

"It's pretty good," he said. "Obviously I wanted to come here and win a stage. I was hoping for Israel to be that stage but this stage was also a big target for me. To come here and repay the team for their hard work and jump back into the top ten is a big day for me."

With this result, Dennis moves back into the top ten and finds himself in sixth position ahead of the remaining five stages, at 5'04" from race leader Simon Yates.

"Basically I just have to hold on for as long as possible," said Dennis. "Some guys will go crazy in the last week. Some guys will be hurting. I will be hurting as well. It's an unknown for me when it comes to GC riding on the mountains in the third week. I'm just going to take it each day and try to hold on to the top ten."
