Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) has been able to control the losses on the Individual Time Trial of the 16th stage at the Giro d'Italia. Against his own thoughts, the rider finished the stage wearing the Pink Jersey.

Yates didn't expect to keep the jersey at the end of the day, but his work paid off when he finished the time trial. "I'm really happy. I really gave everything. I was really dying in the final," he commented to Italian broadcaster RAI before the podium ceremony.

"At 10 kilometres from the end, I really thought that I would lose a lot more time because there was really a block. But that didn't happen and I'm really happy. I'm really surprised that I kept the jersey, to be honest. I thought I would at least lose two minutes."

The route started well for the Briton, but things went a bit downhill getting to the end. "I felt good during the first half, I was in control," Yates explained.

"Maybe I attacked on the climb too much and I paid for it. I hit the climb and I really attacked it, I went off the saddle and I gave everything. And then I didn't recover and I thought I had really messed up. But at the end it was okay."
