Tom Dumoulin of sunweb reduced the gap with Giro d'Italia leader Simon Yates to 56 seconds but wasn't entirely pleased with the result.

The Dutchman had hoped to close the gap with his British rival in Tuesday's time trial but the time gained wasn't enough to achieve that.

"A bit disappointed," he told Dutch broadcaster NOS while cooling down. "I wanted to either take a lot of time on Yates or win the time trial. And I didn't do either. Yates rode a very good time trial. Mine was okay, but not one of my best. So this is the result. I gave everything. I can't really be dissatified, though I wanted and hoped for more."

Dumoulin does not think that his rivals are more fatigued as all are in the exact same situation.

"Rohan Dennis also fights for the GC every day and so does Yates, and both did better than I did, relatively. It's a shame. It can't be a party every time, although I would have liked it to be different."

Although the gap with Yates is still significant, Dumoulin did further distance other rivals like Thibaut Pinot and Domenico Pozzovivo. "That's good," he said, "but the road to Rome is still long. I will keep fighting."
