Andre Greipel of Lotto Soudal has won the first stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour and as such leads the general classification of the five-day race.

The opening stage was practically flat and was always likely to end in a bunch sprint. The start and finish were both located in Buggenhout.

Aime De Gendt, Connor Dunn, Kenny Molly, Giovanni Carboni, Michael Boros and Dieter Bouvry jumped away from the peloton early on and created a gap of more than two minutes. At ten kilometers from the line the margin was still one minute but the hard work of teams like Lotto Soudal proved too much for the leaders to compete with.

A nasty crash occurred at about 400 meters from the end, but did not involve the top names for the sprint. Greipel powered to victory ahead of Astana's Riccardo Minali and Verandas Willems-Crelan rider Tim Merlier.

The race continues on Thursday with an even flatter stage from Lochristi to Knokke-Heist.
