Quick-Step Floors' Maximilian Schachmann took his first ever grand tour stage victory at the end of the 18th day of racing in the Giro d'Italia.

The German formed part of a 12-man breakaway and saw one rival after the other drop as the finish line neared. Having already worn the White Jersey for some days in this Giro, the rider once again proved to be a strong force as he dropped the last remaining opponents in the last 500 meters.

"The final kilometers were really, really hard but I knew that I had a good chance today out of the breakaway," the 24-year-old said. "I tried to play it safe, to not attack too early. It was a hard day. We are already in stage 18 so nobody has fresh legs anymore. So I tried to make the tempo hard for the others and quite enjoyable for me, and to attack in the last meters."

The win means a lot to Schachmann, as it confirms his abilities as a cyclist at he top level.

"I discovered that I'm there, where the best riders are. That makes me really happy. I've felt this whole sprint season. This is just so amazing."

Schachmann joined Quick-Step Floors at the start of 2017. Earlier this year, he took his first UCI WorldTour stage victory at the Volta a Catalunya.
