Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb cut the gap with Giro d'Italia leader Simon Yates in half after seeing his rival get dropped in the last few kilometers of stage 18.

The defending Giro champion first attacked himself and then reacted to an attack by Chris Froome and Domenico Pozzovivo, while Yates found himself struggling to limit the damage.

"I was waiting until the moment and with two kilometers to go I tried to see what was possible," Dumoulin told journalists shortly after the stage, as he was trying to find his way to a refreshing shower.

"He responded to my first attack and then Froome attacked and I tried to follow Pozzovivo and Froome. Then I suddenly found out he was dropped, which was nice.

With two mountain stages to go and a potential mental effect on both Dumoulin and Yates, fans can expect a lot of spectacle in what is left to come.

"Of course it's a good day," Dumoulin said. "But I know that the coming two days are going to be different and even much harder than today."
