UAE Team Emirates leader Fabio Aru has abandoned the 101st Giro d'Italia. The Italian retired early in the 19th stage.

Aru's performance in this Giro had been up and down since the beginning, poor results in mountain stages contrasting with his strong performance in the individual time trial on Tuesday.

With several infamous climb ahead in the 19th stage, Aru decided to throw the towel and got into his team car. The rider gives up his 27th position, having trailed race leader Simon Yates by no less than 45'44".

Aru won the Vuelta a España in 2015, but hasn't managed to finish on the podium of a grand tour since.

Team Sky's Vasil Kiryienka and Sunweb's Louis Vervaeke also abandoned the race on Friday.
