A relieved Tom Dumoulin was happy with his and his team's performance in this Giro d'Italia despite not being able to break Chris Froome's defenses in the 20th stage.
Dumoulin launched several attacks on the final climb but had to accept that the British leader was simply too strong.
"I can't blame myself for anything," the winner of the 2017 edition of the Giro told reporters. "I had three fantastic weeks with the team and I am super grateful."
After realizing that Froome wasn't going to crack, and making it back to the group of favorites along with Sam Oomen, Dumoulin decided to switch roles and ride for his teammate who was securing a top-ten spot at the age of just 22.
"I am happy that I could do something for Sam in the last kilometers," he said.
Although the victory was out of reach, Dumoulin is proud of what he and the team have achieved in this race. "I am super happy with the team. We took everything out of it and we haven't made any mistakes. That's it."
Pending the final stage to Rome on Sunday, this will be the second podium finish for Dumoulin in what was his second planned attempt at the general classification of a grand tour.
