Mikel Nieve took the fifth victory for Mitchelton-Scott at the 2018 Giro d'Italia on his birthday and one day after Simon Yates lost the Pink Jersey.
This is the third victory for the Spaniard in the Corsa Rosa and comes a day after the big disappointment of the collapse of Yates. "I'm very happy to win once again here in the Giro and I'm also happy for the team," commented the rider to Italian broadcaster RAI after the stage.
"After yesterday's stage, this was important for every one of us, to show that we are still here. This is also dedicated to my family, to my son who today turns five months old."
Despite losing the Pink Jersey with three stages to go, Nieve thinks the work of the team has been perfect. "I think we have done an amazing Giro, we have been controlling the peloton every day, we have been the stars every day," the Spaniard explained.
"Yesterday it was a shame but today we came out with the intention of doing something. I would like to thank the team and Roman (Kreuziger) who did a great job for me by helping me to be in the breakaway and then he also worked a lot in the front group. Now I will go and thank him personally. This has been a great present for me."
