Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ has reportedly been rushed to hospital with signs of exhaustion following the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The Frenchman, placed third in the general classification ahead of this stage, was dropped early on the day and reached the finish line at 45 minutes from stage winner Mikel Nieve. This meant a drop to 16th place in the standings.

At the finish, Pinot was seen throwing up as he and his teammates attempted to recover from the efforts.

Dutch journalist Hans Ruggenberg of De Telegraaf later reported that he was on the descent of the Cervinia when an ambulance and Groupama-FDJ team cars came rushing past.

Pinot was yet another top GC rider to experience a collapse in this race. Simon Yates was the most notable victim as he imploded while defending the Pink Jersey a day earlier. Other riders to struggle to get to the finish earlier in this race included Esteban Chaves and Fabio Aru.

Groupama-FDJ has confirmed that Pinot "was kept under observation tonight at Aosta hospital. He suffers from dehydration and fever but is well taken care of and accompanied by our team doctor Jacky Maillot".
