Greg van Avermaet (BMC) will not start at the European Championships that will take place in Glasgow. The team of the Olympic champion has let the Belgian coach know that he can't count on any of its riders.

This decision was mainly taken due to the fact that the BinckBank Tour will start only one day after the European championships. Even though there will be a private flight to take the riders straight to Heerenveen, where the Dutch race starts, for BMC this is not enough.

"If you are going to fight for the overall victory at the BinckBank Tour, it is very difficult," said Belgian coach Kevin De Weert to newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "This is a stage race of the World Tour, so teams want to start performing from day one."

"Dylan Teuns was another one of our great options, but unfortunately I have to accept the decision of BMC. They need their riders and that is very unfortunate for us. The course in Glasgow is really made for riders like Greg. You could compare it to a heavy Flemish course or a light Amstel course."

For now, BMC is the only team that is stopping its riders from starting in the race, but De Weert thinks there could be more. "I am negotiating and I can't say too much about it."

The coach also wants to include Cyclocross champion Wout van Aert but it is still uncertain if it will fit the rider's program.
